We’d like to be able to applaud the U.S. State Department for condemning the Egyptian government’s decision to murder over 500 people, without having to choke on the fact that the U.S. government has been killing thousands of people with drones, many of them civilians — not to mention giving massive supplies of weapons to the abusive Egyptian government that it is condemning.
We’d love it if we could cheer for the U.S. government’s denunciations of Russian belligerence in the Ukraine, without the oppressive weight of the string of illegal U.S. wars stretching from Afghanistan through Iraq to Libya and the drone wars in Yemen and Pakistan, not to mention the NATO expansion and State Department interference in the Ukraine that has escalated tensions.
We would like it if the U.S. government’s condemnations of human rights abuses in nations whose governments it wants to overthrow carried the weight they would if matched by condemnations of such abuses in nations whose governments the U.S. arms and supports, such as Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Israel, Egypt, etc.
Imagine if the U.S. Secretary of State were able to condemn illegal wars without many people immediately pointing out that he had recently supported some. Imagine if the United States could oppose torture abroad without having established immunity for all U.S. torturers. Toward this end we are launching a campaign to stamp out hypocrisy.
When U.S. government officials engage in flagrant hypocrisy, we will strive to call them on it.
We will demand that the United States end its aggressive militarism, reform its criminal justice system, join the International Criminal Court, prosecute violators of treaties, and lead by example rather than hypocritical pronouncements.
Join the anti-hypocrisy movement now.
