Today, February 21, is the 15th anniversary of the massacre in the Peace Community of San José de Apartadó, where 8 civilians, including an 18-month old, were killed by paramilitary and military forces. After this massacre, FOR and other organizations succesfully lobbied Congress to stop US funding for the Colombian military brigade responsible for the massacre. Our field team is currently in San José with a large delegation to commemorate this massacre and those that were killed (shown in photos above).
As an organization, we have long been critical of the U.S. military’s role in training and supporting the Colombian military while they engage in human rights abuses.
