In retaliation for rocket attacks that wounded U.S. military members, President Biden ordered airstrikes last week that killed at least 22 people and wounded more. He failed to get Congressional approval before taking military action, which is unacceptable.

This act is just e latest in an ever-expanding, global conflict based in the Middle East, which has killed countless civilians, militarized our society, and fed xenophobia and hate worldwide. So we’re joining our allies at Common Defense, a progressive veterans’ organization, to call on President Biden to end the cycle of violence.

Sign now to demand President Biden use his power as Commander in Chief to review all military deployments around the world, bring our troops home as responsibly and quickly as possible, and finally bring the decades-long Forever War to an end.

Today, scientists moved the Doomsday Clock closer to midnight than ever before, thanks to the mortal perils of climate crisis and nuclear weapons. The clock, which was created in the wake of World War II to measure the most dire threats to humanity, is now at 100 seconds to midnight.

This announcement should shake us to our core — and then jolt us into action.

But how do we act in the face of the deadliest-yet threats to the survival of our species? In the statement accompanying their Doomsday Clock announcement, world-renowned scientists plead for nuclear disarmament, multilateral diplomacy, and a full-on confrontation of the climate emergency. But they also include a recommendation that’s a little different, and caught my eye as a journalist: They call on the people of the world to “unmask social media disinformation.” They call on us to “insist on facts, and discount nonsense.”

Insist on facts. Discount nonsense. These may seem like simple demands. But at a time when the most powerful human in the world is helming a disinformation campaign of mindblowing proportions, “insisting on facts” is not just common sense. It is an act of courageous resistance.

In case you have not seen it already, I wanted to share with you a message from our executive director about the amazing progress we’ve made this month on our Trees for Life campaign. This year, we will already be planting more trees than we ever have before. But, Tarcisio, I know we can do even more. Check out Yousef’s message below to find out why supporting Trees for Life roots resistance in Palestine for generations to come- and how you can be a part of that future. If you’re already one of the hundreds of people who supported this campaign, thank you.
Warmly,

The olive harvest season is drawing to a close in Palestine, but farmers are still facing Israeli settler and military violence. Last month, Israel destroyed 550 olive trees, stole several tons of produce, and prevented hundreds of farming families from accessing their land.

The olive groves that were destroyed were the primary source of livelihood for Palestinian farming families – and served as a symbol of resistance to the occupation and a direct tie to the land of Palestine. With our Trees for Life partnership with the Palestinian Fair Trade Association, you have one last opportunity to provide tangible relief to these farmers.

Tarcisio, today is #GivingTuesday and your last chance to root Palestinian resistance on the ground and through our work here.
When you give $25 today, we will plant a tree in your name. When you give $100, we will plant five trees. As thanks for your gift, we will send you a commemorative certificate that honors your support of the farmers. These also make a great holiday gift.
It is not enough for us to just replace the trees that were destroyed. This returns us to the status quo, a situation we know is unsustainable. We have to do better than that, which is why we have the ambitious goal raising enough of 1,500 trees. The good news is that we are already 78% of the way there – and now we need your help in the final stretch.
Olive trees have immense social, economic, and cultural significance for Palestinians. With 329 trees to go, your help is needed to reach our goal. Help us ensure these trees will be rooted for generations to come.
Onward,
YOUSEF MUNAYYER
Executive Director
PS: Join nearly 500 people who have taken action for Palestinian Rights and farming families – your tree can contribute to a farming family’s livelihood for generations to come. Help us reach our goal of 1,500 trees by making a tax-deductible donation today.

Liu Xia Is Not Free: Call on President Xi Jinping to Release Poet from House Arrest

Liu Xia Is Not Free: Call on President Xi Jinping to Release Poet from House Arrest

TO:
His Excellency Mr. Xi Jinping
President of the People’s Republic of China
Zhongnanhai, Xichengqu
Beijing
The People’s Republic of China

Your Excellency,

As writers, artists, and supporters of PEN America, we write to express our concern over the continued detention of poet Liu Xia. We ask you to remove all remaining restrictions on Liu Xia, including over her freedom of movement, and to permit her to meet and speak freely with others including her family, friends, and members of the media.

Liu Xia, a celebrated Chinese poet, painter, and photographer, has been under house arrest since 2010, despite having never been charged with any crime. As you know, Ms. Liu was also the beloved wife of writer and Nobel laureate Liu Xiaobo until his death on July 13. The only apparent reason for her long detention is her connection to Liu Xiaobo. As a result of her years of enforced solitude, Liu Xia is reported to be in poor physical and mental health, including a diagnosis of depression and a heart condition.

Liu Xia was last publicly seen on July 15, when she participated in her husband’s memorial service. Since then, she has not been seen in public. Her friends have been unable to meet with her in person, and journalists and diplomats who have attempted to visit her home have been stopped by security agents. While she appeared in a short video in August requesting “time to mourn,” it is widely understood that the video was almost certainly scripted, and that Liu was unable to speak freely.

Although Chinese officials claim that she is free, the circumstances make it clear that she remains in a state of de facto incommunicado detention, cut off from the outside world and barred from making her own free decisions regarding whom to speak with and where to travel.

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, the Chair of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, the United States Secretary of State, and the German Embassy to the PRC, among others, have expressed their hope that you will lift all remaining restrictions and ensure Liu Xia’s freedom of movement. As writers, journalists, and free expression advocates, we add our voices to theirs.

We make this call in recognition of China’s domestic and international legal obligations to uphold Liu Xia’s human rights: The Universal Declaration of Human Rights enshrines, and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights guarantees, the rights to freedom of speech, freedom of movement, and freedom from arbitrary detention. China is a signatory to both the UDHR and the ICCPR. Liu Xia’s detention was also found to be in violation of international law by the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention in 2011. China’s current status as a member of the UN Human Rights Council renders it especially important that China respect these international obligations.

China’s Constitution also guarantees freedom of speech (Article 35), freedom of person (Article 37), and freedom and privacy of correspondence (Article 40), all rights which are implicated by the continuing detention of Liu Xia, which has no apparent legal basis.

We also appeal to your conscience and your sense of compassion. Liu Xia has undergone great suffering for many years, simply for being the wife of a man that China has deemed to be a dissident. She has committed no crime, and she has not been charged with any crime. She is in poor health, she is isolated from those who care for her, and she is grieving deeply for the loss of her husband. She should be free to meet freely with family, friends, and members of the international community, free to travel where she wishes, and free to be reunited with the outside world.

In recognition of all this, Your Excellency, we urge you to lift all remaining restrictions against Liu Xia, and to ensure her freedom of speech, her freedom to meet with others, and her freedom to travel.

The Coming War on China is a documentary film by the award-winning journalist and filmmaker John Pilger.

Filmed over two years in the Marshall Islands, Japan, Korea, China and the United States, the film reveals a build-up to war on the doorstep of China. More than 400 US military bases now encircle China in what one strategist calls “a perfect noose”. Bringing together rare archive and interviews with witnesses, Pilger reveals the US’s secret history in the region.

As Trump threatens China with a trade war and worse, this film is both a warning and an inspiring story of resistance.

You can book your ticket here. The film starts at 6.30 sharp.
A chance for change – urgent Stop the War appeal

We’ve launched an appeal on Friday. A big thank you to everyone who has donated already.

Recent revelations that the UK has dropped more than 3,400 bombs and missiles in Iraq and Syria have confirmed how involved Britain has been in the carpet bombing which is estimated to have led to 40,000 civilian deaths in Mosul alone.

We now have a chance to break this cycle of violence and to develop a peaceful foreign policy in Britain. Stop the War is at the forefront of the campaign for change.

We need to intensify our campaigning and we are asking for your generous help. Your donations will enable us to promote the anti-war arguments more widely, support new Stop the War groups springing up around the country, sustain an increased level of staffing and upgrade our communications.

The target for our appeal is £25,000. Please give generously.

The first 10 to donate £100 or above will receive a copy of the book People Power: Fighting For Peace signed by Lindsey German.

£50 pays for an advert reaching thousands of people.
£100 pays for 50 placards.
£300 is enough to book a film screening.
£650 pays for a public rally.

This October VFP UK will be hosting the first of a series of debates on the concept of democracy, debate and dissent in the Armed Forces and the impact on our society and history.

Entre os que falam se encontram historiadores John Rees, editor do novo livro  ‘John Lilburne and the Levellers, reappraising the roots of English Radicalism 400 years on’, w  Julian Putowski, autor de  ‘Shot at Dawn’.

Keynote speakers include historians John Rees, editor of the new book ‘John Lilburne and the Levellers, reappraising the roots of English Radicalism 400 years on’, and Julian Putowski, author of ‘Shot at Dawn’. The headline of the event will be a debate with modern day dissenters former SAS soldier Ben Griffin, and renowned author of ‘Soldier Box’ Joe Glenton. In each session audience feedback, questions, and debate will be encouraged.

At the end of the first English Civil War soldiers, civilians, and men of power came together to debate the future of England and their place in it. The debates started on 28th October 1647 at St Mary’s Church in Putney. Some of their ideas on democracy, representation, and land rights have still not been achieved, such as the abolition of the House of Lords. This was the beginning of the discussion about democracy and the rights of people in a modern society.

This is the first time in 370 years that veterans have come together to commemorate this event and discuss the big issues of the day.

Começa 12:00 h e a entrada é livre.

Starting at 12:00 hrs, entry is free. For further information please refer our Facebook pages or email 1647@vfpuk.org

Ocean blasting kills marine life. Click here to tell the Secretary of the Interior to put a stop to seismic testing and save the whales.

Tarcisio,

Just imagine for a moment if your home was assaulted with an insanely loud blast, louder than 10 jet engines, every 10 seconds. All day, all night, for days to months on end. This is actually a heartbreaking reality for whales and other marine life as Big Oil does its dirty business off our pristine coasts using seismic air blasts to search for oil and gas deposits beneath the seafloor.

The Interior Department announced it is planning on moving forward with seismic surveys in the Atlantic Ocean following President Donald Trump’s executive order to expand offshore drilling in protected areas in the Arctic and Atlantic oceans. Six permit applications by energy companies, that were originally rejected by the Obama administration, are now being reviewed by the department.1

The noise of these blasts is so loud that it can be heard up to 2,500 miles from the source – to put in perspective, that is about the distance from Los Angeles, CA, to Washington, DC!2 And it’s not just sealife upset about this, more than 120 East Coast municipalities that formally oppose offshore drilling and/or seismic airgun blasting. The Interior Department’s comment period on seismic survey ends July 7th.3 Click here to press the mute button on seismic testing.

Seismic blasting for oil and gas deafens and kills whales and dolphins. Tell Secretary Zinke to protect marine life, communities and the climate by keeping fossil fuels in the ground.

These blasts have a devastating effect on marine life, including turtles, dolphins and whales, which depend on sound to find food and mates, navigate, avoid predators, take care of young and survive.

Endangered whales and other marine life are at risk.4 Big Oil is pushing to open new sections of our coastline – from the Atlantic to the Arctic. That means that testing could be coming soon to a lot more states — including beaches all along the Atlantic coast, and sections of California previously not drilled too.

Unless we raise our voices and stop it, the expanded use of seismic airguns could devastate marine life, harming fisheries and coastal economies. Click here to press the mute button on seismic testing.

Thank you for taking environmental action,

A máquina de guerra e tortura chamada America.

https://www.newcoldwar.org/united-states-russian-devil-1917-2017/

Since the end of World War Two, the United States has:

  • Attempted to overthrow more than 50 foreign governments, most of which were democratically-elected.
  • Dropped bombs on the people of more than 30 countries.
  • Attempted to assassinate more than 50 foreign leaders.
  • Attempted to suppress a populist or nationalist movement in 20 countries.
  • Grossly interfered in democratic elections in at least 30 countries.[5]
  • Though not as easy to quantify, has also led the world in torture; not only the torture performed directly by Americans upon foreigners, but providing torture equipment, torture manuals, lists of people to be tortured, and in-person guidance by American instructors.[6]

Where does the United States get the nerve to moralize about Russia? Same place they get the nerve to label Putin a “killer” … a “butcher” … a “thug”. It would be difficult to name a world-renowned killer, butcher, or thug – not to mention dictator, mass murderer, or torturer – of the past 75 years who was not a close ally of Washington.
